Bonaire Activities

Bonaire is well renowned as a world class shore diving location. Imagine not being tied to the schedule and costs of dive boats but rather, you can dive at your own pace and leisure. You can wake up later, take a dive, go back to your villa for lunch and relax, then take another dive or 2 in the afternoon. Or, night dive any night, if you wish. Bonaire plays a leading role in nature protection - both above and under water and it has been as example many times for other islands and countries. Bonaire's 2,700 hectares (6,750 acres) of pristine reefs and diverse marine life are unique to the Caribbean. Because the waters around Bonaire have been designated as the official Bonaire National Marine Park since 1979, Diving Bonaire is like diving the Caribbean the way it used to be, untouched and unspoiled. The park's purpose is to ensure that Bonaire's marine resources, the magnificent coral reefs, sea-grass beds and mangroves, remain intact so that everyone can enjoy the wonderful coral reefs for years to come, just as they are now. A nice day trip is the Washington Slagbaai National Park on the northern side of the island. This park was established in 1969 and covers 6.543 hectares (16 acres). It is recommended to allow a full day for this trip as it is a large park and requires good shoes or boots for hiking. A few of the other activities to fill your vacation are a trip to the Donkey Sanctuary, an afternoon of kayaking or snorkeling through the Mangroves to view the salt water nurseries of many of the island tropical fish. Bonaire's arid, semi-desert interior, with its unpaved roads, lends itself to adventuresome mountain bike touring or paved roads suitable for comfortable cycling along the island's sparsely populated coast. How about sports fishing for Marlin, Tuna and Wahoo, or Parasailing from as high as 1200 feet (366 m). The constant easterly trade winds make Bonaire a true sailing and windsurfing paradise at Lac Bay. Try a round of Golf, the Bonaire way...18 holes of pure fun in the sun. Either way, there are lots of things to keep you occupied during your stay. Many restaurants and bars provide a cozy nightlife that mainly takes place outside, under the stars.
